Description

Any Cancer.  Any Question. Phone 0800 CANCER (226 237)

For someone living with cancer, practical and emotional support is incredibly important.  Cancer Society is committed to providing professional supportive care and accommodation to those going through cancer treatment, and their supporters.

Cancer Information:

Our experienced cancer information nurses provide personalised support by phone through the 0800 Cancer Information Helpline and in person at Domain Lodge. This free service ensures that anyone facing a cancer diagnosis, or supporting someone with a cancer diagnosis, has easy access to a trained cancer support nurse specialist to help them understand their cancer and its treatment and find support.

Psychology Service:

During individual sessions our psychologists offer support and skills to help people cope with difficult emotions, manage relationships, deal with uncertainty, make decisions and regain confidence.

In group sessions and informal talks (webinar or at Domain Lodge) our psychologists provide the opportunity for people affected by cancer to meet others in a similar situation and learn practical skills for staying in control – the topics include coping with difficult emotions, relaxation, sleep and stress management, and moving forward after treatment.

Cancer Support Nurse Specialists:

Our qualified Cancer Support Nurse Specialists provide practical support to people recently diagnosed with cancer and their families, with a particular focus on those receiving treatment.

In the comfort of their clients’ own homes our nurses listen and offer empathy and encouragement. The nurses also answer questions about cancer, help manage cancer symptoms and treatment side effects and assist with overcoming practical difficulties like getting to treatment.

Social Work Service:

The social work service is available to patients and their whānau/supporters in Auckland and Northland.  Our registered social workers can visit and phone you to provide information / resources, advocacy and support relevant to your needs.

Free Cancer Talks:

Group programmes provide an opportunity for adults with cancer and their supporters to learn strategies for coping with cancer. These groups are FREE. See website for further details.

Domain Lodge

Cancer Society's Domain Lodge is proud to offer a home away from home for people with cancer who have to travel long distances to receive treatment in Auckland.

Conveniently located across the road from the Auckland City Treatment Centre, Domain Lodge is a modern building set in beautiful gardens. The atmosphere is relaxed with friendly and understanding staff and guests are free to come and go as they please.

Domain Lodge is also home to Cancer Society Auckland Northland and our range of support services.

While priority is given to people with cancer, Domain Lodge is also open to the public. Income earned from guests helps us provide fully subsidised accommodation for people with cancer.

Who can stay at Domain Lodge?

  • Adult cancer patients, who live in Northland or outside the 100km radius from Auckland City Hospital, are able to stay at Domain Lodge while undergoing cancer treatment.

  • Patients who live inside the 100km radius can only be accepted under exceptional circumstances. If you do not qualify, our Transport to Treatment service may be able to help you. Please contact us to find out more.

  • Each patient is welcome to have one support person/caregiver who is over the age of 18 years, to stay with them providing they are able to share a room. Please note children under 18 years of age are unable to stay with patients or supporters/caregivers, but are welcome to visit during the day.

  • All patients staying at Domain Lodge need to be able to look after themselves individually or with the help of a supporter/caregiver.
