ADIO follows a Harm Reduction Philosophy. This means that we seek to reduce the harms associated with injecting drug use and related behaviours, while neither condemning nor condoning drug use.

ADIO Trust provides a public health service, funded by Health New Zealand and has been operating for 35 years.

Staff

We are a peer-based organisation with peer workers who have lived or living experience of injecting drug use. All our staff are non-judgemental and here to help. We neither condemn nor condone the use of drugs and respect where you are on your journey.

Our needle exchange service is completely confidential and anonymous.

Our Hep C service is completely confidential and covered by the Health and Disability Code.

Fees and Charges Description

NEEDLE EXCHANGE SERVICE:

  • All injecting equipment is free to people who inject drugs. Condoms are provided free.
  • We encourage you to bring in your used syringes and needles for safe disposal.
  • We also sell some supplies such a AA bottles and Hirudoid cream. Our retail prices of equipment are based on our not-for-profit status and being a public health service.
  • The Hep C service is completely free to access, and we provide vouchers to encourage eligible clients to get tested.
  • We provide a courier service of injecting equipment to clients' homes. This is free to more remote areas; a cost of $10 applies if the address is closer to the needle exchange.

We are closed on public holidays. The Vending Machine will be operating on these days and restocked daily.

Needle Exchange Service

We are a confidential and anonymous service. Our service is non-judgemental and peer-based. Walk in to the needle exchanges - no referral needed, all welcome. Some exchanges have Vending machines open 24 hours. Free Hep C Testing and referrals to health care professionals

In the Northern Region, anyone who requires further details or clarification can contact ADIO on (09) 356 7373 or call your local needle exchange. Our Hep C Clinic at 10 East Street, Newton is free and welcomes walk-ins, no appointment necessary. We do finger prick testing Mon to Fri from 10.00am - 3.00pm and occasionally till 5pm and evenings. Our peer workers offer free Hep C tests (rapid fingerprick tests) and eligible clients get a $30 Woolworths voucher. No appointment needed, just walk-in. We offer support if you test positive and can also test you if you are antibody positive with a further finger prick test (instead of going to a lab for a blood test). We also refer you to a local health professional (Pharmacist) who will follow up and organise treatment if required. We link you to free treatment for Hep C (the new cure MAVIRET for all Hep C types) and our peer workers support our clients throughout the course of treatment.
