Community Health Service

Today

8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Description

Asthma Waikato provides expertise, education, support and assessment services to children with asthma aged 0-15 living in the Waikato region, and their families.  Asthma Waikato have developed a range of programmes that support children and their families on a one to one basis, as well as providing asthma education to community groups such as schools, ELCs and first aid providers. Asthma Waikato also offers spirometry training for healthcare professionals.

At Asthma Waikato we educate and support families so they can take control of their respiratory condition rather than letting it control them. The programmes (with the exception of professional development) are FREE. Asthma Waikato Educators provide consults in the way that is most beneficial to the need of each family, which may be face to face in the clinic, or perhaps via Zoom, Facetime or other virtual means or perhaps over the phone. Home visits are considered under exceptional circumstances. Consults and education sessions are always followed up with take-home resources as well as ongoing recalls and support.

We explain:

  • What asthma actually is
  • What medicines there are and what they do
  • What a spacer is
  • What different devices there are
  • What triggers are
  • What other things might be impacting asthma

And more

We explain the 'why' of all these things because if people know the 'why' they are more likely to comply.

We ensure kids are on:

  • The right medicine
  • The right dose
  • The right device

Our education ensures that they and their whānau know how to:

  • Take it in the right way
  • At the right time

We give people

  • Our time
  • Our expertise
  • Robust follow up
  • An open door policy for reaching out
  • Holistic care
  • A warm, welcoming environment for the whole whānau

Family / whānau support

We make sure children know the right way medicine should be taken, and when medicine should be taken so they know how to manage their asthma. We understand that family situations can be complex and we spend as much time as is needed to ensure parents/caregivers/guardians understand asthma and how they support their child with asthma (and we can assist with smoking cessation referrals).
