Romiromi with Heron

Community Health Service, Kaupapa Māori

Description

Romiromi with Heron is an ACC-registered Rongoā Māori practitioner based in Gisborne.

In Gisborne, from 21A Derby St, Romiromi with Heron Clinic, I offer the traditional healing art of romiromi. Each session is a one-hour journey towards wellness.

Our Kaupapa Māori Approach: Embracing kaupapa Māori, our romiromi services weave together tikanga Māori (customs), mātauranga Māori (knowledge), te reo Māori (language), and te ao Māori (worldview) into a tapestry of holistic healing. We treat more than just physical ailments; we nurture the whole being, aiming to rejuvenate your mana (prestige/power) and mauri (life force). Integral to our sessions are karakia (prayers) and whakawhiti kōrero (dialogues), ensuring a culturally immersive and spiritually enriching experience that concludes with a closing karakia.

Please note, the clinic is not equipped with wheelchair access, and services are provided exclusively at this location.

In 2003, my journey into the world of traditional Māori healing began when I met Margaret Goldsmith at Hauiti Hauora, where she offered mirimiri services. At the time, Dr Paratene Ngata was a proponent of her alternative healing methods, which had not yet been recognised by ACC for Rongoā Māori Services. Witnessing the remarkable improvement in my grandfather’s respiratory health, despite having only one lung, sparked my interest in Rongoā Māori. The use of kawakawa leaves in his treatment led to significant benefits, allowing him better control over his breathing and improved sleep. Inspired by these events, I delved deeper into the practice, attending wānanga and learning under the guidance of Wikitoria Oman. I am deeply grateful for the support of my kaumātua, Wikitoria Oman, and my partner, Cran Gage, who have been instrumental in my education on traditional healing at the Whare Wānanga o Hohepa Delamere.

Fast forward to 2024, I took a significant step by founding Te Taunga o Te Kotuku LTD, marking the establishment of my own company. In a notable achievement, I became a registered practitioner of Romiromi under ACC Rongoā Māori in October 2023.

Services Provided

ACC Rongoā Māori

ACC Rongoā Māori ACC recognise rongoā Māori as a kaupapa Māori service. It's culturally grounded care that weaves tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, te reo Māori, and te ao Māori through all aspects of the service. We respect that these aspects embrace ngā taonga tuku iho (intergenerational gifts and knowledge handed down from tupuna Māori). We see rongoā Māori in the wider context of traditional Māori healing methodologies. ACC don't consider healing techniques from non-Māori cultural traditions, such as reiki or hyperbaric oxygen treatment, part of rongoā Māori. Even if they're provided by rongoā Māori practitioners. What to expect from Romiromi with Heron: About Romiromi: Romiromi is a holistic tune-up, harmonising body and spirit by releasing energy blockages that can cause discomfort or imbalance. Utilising forearms, feet, hands, and sometimes rakau (sticks), romiromi targets specific pressure points and deep tissue layers to alleviate stress and restore energetic equilibrium. It’s a process of purging what no longer serves you - be it lingering emotions or stagnant energy - resulting in a renewed sense of vitality and engagement with life. Our practice marries these ancient techniques with contemporary anatomical understanding.
