New Zealand’s expert body in both sexual assault/abuse and non-fatal strangulation/suffocation (NFSS) medicine, providing the education, accreditation and advocacy required for the delivery of accessible and appropriate high-quality healthcare in these areas.
These services are available free of charge, nationwide.
MEDSAC trains medical professionals throughout New Zealand including doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, paediatricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists, to become primary providers of forensic and medical care to the specialist services that provide medical examinations following sexual assault/abuse (Sexual Abuse Assessment and Treatment Service - SAATS) and in the assessment of non-fatal strangulation and suffocation (Non-Fatal Strangulation/Suffocation Assessment Service - NFSSAS).
Services we provide include:
- Training courses - to specially train clinicians in the medical forensic response to sexual assault/abuse.
- Mentoring Programmes - to support progress for the clinician towards accreditation by being paired with a MEDSAC-accredited forensic examiner.
- Accreditation - to promote expertise and competency within a service.
- Non-fatal strangulation/suffocation education programme.
- A national directory of specialist sexual assault medical services (SAATS) in Aotearoa New Zealand. SAATS is a free service to people of all ages and genders who may have experienced sexual assault.
