Description

The Falls and Fracture Prevention Team is a small team of nurses and allied health professionals. 

Our team are passionate about keeping older people well and independent. Positive ageing is about providing the best quality of life for older people. A joint initiative by the Ministry of Health, Health Quality and Safety Commission and ACC aims to keep older adults safe on their feet and reduce injuries from falls.

We are a non-urgent service, working Monday - Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm.

Public Holidays: Closed ANZAC Day (25 Apr), King's Birthday (3 Jun), Matariki (28 Jun), Labour Day (28 Oct), Waitangi Day (6 Feb), Good Friday (18 Apr), Easter Sunday (20 Apr), Easter Monday (21 Apr).

Services Provided

Home based strength and balance programme

Based on the Otago Exercise Programme, we support older adults at home with leg muscle strengthening and balance retraining exercises. The 12 week Programme focuses on supporting those aged over 75 years (>65 for Maori and Pacific Islanders) who have fallen in the last year, and who cannot access a community strength and balance class or group.

Service types: Wellness / healthy lifestyle, Exercise and activity, Injury support services.

As the lead agency appointed by ACC, we approve existing exercise groups and help develop new classes aimed at improving strength and balance. Group classes that have received the ‘tick of approval’ can be found on the ACC Live Stronger for Longer website.

Fracture Liaison Service

We identify people who are over 50 that may have broken a bone as a result of a minor fall or bump. We aim to promote bone health and the several positive steps that can be taken for those who may be at risk of fractures related to osteoporosis.
