What to expect at a dental visit

Your dentist will assess your tooth and gum health and may also take x-rays. X-rays will help them detect dental caries and provide an indication of the health of the dental pulp and roots of your teeth. Your dentist will identify areas where you can improve your oral health and, if a problem is detected, recommend treatment options and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist dentist or oral surgeon.

Your dentist or dental hygienist may also give you a professional clean to remove calculus (tartar, calcified plaque) that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Regular cleaning of the teeth greatly improves the health of your gums. Not removing calculus provides ideal conditions for bacteria to grow between your teeth and gums and this can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
