Bachelor of Midwifery, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, 11 November 2005

Profile

I started a nursing career at age seventeen and worked at Auckland Hospital as a paediatric nurse and then at National Women’s Hospital as a theatre nurse. I then spent some time in London where I worked as a Palliative Care nurse.

When I returned to New Zealand I changed career direction and worked in the restaurant business and later opened my own cafe in Auckland City which I operated for fourteen years. I returned to nursing after the birth of my daughter working mostly in obstetrics at National Women’s Hospital and from there went on to study and qualify as a Registered Midwife.

I believe in quiet, undisturbed birthing so that baby enters this world gently and without stress. I encourage women to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout their pregnancy and support healthy women to labour at home until they are ready to come into the Hospital/Birthing Unit.

I believe that women have a more positive birth experience when they are surrounded by family and friends who support and encourage them to birth naturally. I have facilitated several water births and believe that water use in labour has a wonderful calming effect and I encourage healthy women to use water where appropriate.

I birth most of my women at Waitakere Hospital in West Auckland, but will also birth at Birthcare in Parnell or at North Shore or Auckland Hospital. I look forward to guiding women through their pregnancy and birth and providing breastfeeding support and guidance for up to six weeks after birth.

Years of practice: Over 7 years

Back up midwife: Julie Wharton, Sue den Hartog and Deidre Jeffries.

Birth facilities attended: Primarily Waitakere and Auckland Hospitals. I also have access to Birthcare and North Shore Hospital.
