Dr Graham Gulbransen is the first NZ doctor to prescribe the standardised cannabis product Tilray CBD. He has treated over 2000 patients with CBD, THC or blends of THC/CBD. Most have chronic pain. Others have neurological conditions like seizures or spasms, emotional symptoms like anxiety or sleep disorder, or cancer symptoms. Very good to excellent benefits are commonly reported by patients.

Legal prescription items include oils containing CBD, THC or both and Sativex spray that contains THC and CBD.

Graham is an experienced medically trained Cannabis Consultant, General Practitioner and Addiction Specialist.

He takes self-referrals and GP referrals for assessment and for the prescribing of medicinal cannabis.

What is Detoxification?

Here we are talking about using medication prescribed by an experienced Addiction Specialist doctor to reduce the distressing symptoms of alcohol or drug withdrawal.

Such a detox is best supported by family/whānau or a rehabilitation service.

Detoxification - my work

I assess and prescribe medication for clients stopping (or reducing) these substances:

  • Alcohol
  • Methamphetamine
  • GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate, 'G' waz, 'drinks', 'beers')
  • Cannabis
  • Tobacco
  • Benzodiazepines and opioids (may need authorisation from CADS)

  • Diazepam or oxazepam to reduce withdrawal symptoms
  • Thiamine (vitamin B1) to reduce the harm to the nervous system
  • Disulfiram (antabuse)
  • Naltrexone to reduce alcohol craving and limit binges
  • Metoclopramide for nausea
  • Quetiapine for acute anxiety or insomnia
  • Melatonin, promethazine, zopiclone, temazepam etc for insomnia
  • Continuation, review or starting mental health medication
  • Vaping is highly recommended to reduce or stop smoking
  • CBD (medicinal cannabis) taken as oral drops may ease emotional distress or pain underlying an addiction.
