Profile

Tom Wang, MBChB, MD, FRACP, FACC, FESC, FASE is a clinical, multi-modality imaging and academic consultant cardiologist based at Auckland City Hospital. He grew up in Auckland and graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School as Senior Scholar in 2011. After completing cardiology advanced training across the 3 Auckland regional hospitals, he worked 6-months as cardiologist at Middlemore Hospital and completed his MD research doctorate in 2019. He then undertook the 2-year advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, the top-ranked cardiovascular hospital in the United States for 30 consecutive years. He stayed on as a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic in 2021, with concomitant roles of Assistant Professor then later Associate Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, before returning to New Zealand in 2026.

His clinical and research interests incorporate a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, heart failure/cardiomyopathies,  and cardiovascular prevention. He is an experienced cardiac imager with US board certification in echocardiography (including transthoracic, stress, transoesophageal, and periprocedural/structural echocardiography), cardiovascular computed tomography (CT) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MRI), using these to optimize patient management. He has published over 260 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and 10 book chapters, won ~15 research awards, and is experienced in clinical trials and on editorial boards of international cardiology and medical journals. Highlights include chairing the 2025 American College of Cardiology clinical concise guidance expert consensus of pericardial diseases, and co-authoring the book chapter on pericardial diseases in Braunwald’s Heart Disease, the hallmark reference textbook in cardiology. He is passionate about patient care and improving their cardiovascular outcomes in clinical practice and research.
