MB BS 1994 London; FRACP 2004
Since graduating from University of London (UK), I have completed dual fellowships in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. I trained at the NZ Liver Transplant Unit and did a research fellowship at Middlemore Hospital. During this time I undertook research into colorectal polyp prevalence in Māori and Pacific Islanders. I have also published research in familial bowel cancer, Helicobacter pylori, viral hepatitis, gastric hormone levels and thiopurine use in IBD. More recently I have trained in ERCP at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, RSA. I also have a continuing interest in familial gastrointestinal cancer and perform surveillance for the majority of the local FAP (familial adenomatous polyposis) kindred.
I have been a Gastroenterology specialist now for almost 20 years and have actively avoided sub specialisation. I enjoy looking after all patients with any Gastroenterology or Hepatology problem- from Irritable bowel to Liver transplant. My public hospital workload is primarily interventional (ERCP, stenting, dilatations, Endoscopic Mucosal Resections), and colorectal cancer screening, which helps keep my endoscopic skills high. I am an honorary Senior Lecturer for Auckland Medical School and have previously been Clinical Director of Gastroenterology at Waikato Public Hospital.
