I trained in New Zealand at Auckland University and passed the FRACS in 1998. Following this, I spent two years training in GI and Colorectal surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. I am currently the Clinical Head of the Colorectal unit at North Shore Hospital and a member of the Melanoma unit. My other professional activities include running the Auckland Surgical Trainee teaching program and surgical research. I enjoy teaching and am happy to teach at GP meetings

I have particular expertise in the management of all colorectal disease.  Where possible surgery is carried out laparoscopically which minimises hospital stay, wound size and patient discomfort.  It also means a quicker return to normal activities.

I also do a lot of laparascopic surgery for other abdominal conditions such as gallstones, hernias and appendicitis.

My other main interest and area of expertise is the management of melanoma, including sentinel node biopsy.   I am a member of the North Shore Hospital Melanoma Unit which is actively involved in melanoma research.    This gives me access to therapeutic trials involving new treatment modalities such as vaccines.

I did a two year fellowship in colorectal and upper GI surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland.  I have since done further training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Australia.
