Joseph grew up in Christchurch. He initially studied at the University of Canterbury, before going onto Medical School in Dunedin. He graduated from the University of Otago Medical School.
After graduation and time spent as a junior at Christchurch Public Hospital, Joseph worked for several years as a GP in Hamilton before returning to Christchurch.
From 2010 until 2024 he was a Director of a Medical Centre in central Christchurch, working full time as a General Practitioner. During this period Joseph also developed an interest in aged care, and provided medical care for a number of facilities. He has developed extensive experience in all facets of residential care, including rest home, hospital, psychogeriatric and palliative care.
He now works exclusively in aged care. and currently holds a number of contracts with aged care facilities.

A "Vocationally Registered" doctor has qualifications and experience that allow them to be registered as a specialist in a particular scope of practice e.g. General Practice, Urgent Care. These doctors can work independently in New Zealand.
