Primary Maternity Service
This includes birthing units and small maternity hospitals. These premises are ideal for women who wish to give birth with minimal intervention and are not considered high risk.

Attended by:

• an independent midwife of your choice, or
• a GP of your choice and hospital midwives, or
• a team of hospital midwives.

Secondary Maternity Service
This is usually a large hospital. These premise are ideal for all women, from those who wish to give birth with minimal intervention, to those who are considered high risk and may need medical intervention during labour.

Attended by:

• an independent midwife of your choice, or
• a GP of your choice and hospital midwives, or
• an independent midwife and private obstetrician of your choice, or
• a private obstetrician of your choice and hospital midwives, or
• hospital based midwives, or
• the hospital maternity team.
