Description
Our three teams provide alcohol and drug assessment, treatment, advice and detoxification options. Alcohol and Drug Services operate in three clusters across the Waikato DHB health district.

Staff
Our staff group are made up of psychiatrists who specialise in addiction, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists and alcohol and drug clinicians. We are a teaching facility so we also have students from all disciplines at times.

The Community Alcohol and Drug Service (CADS) provide alcohol and drug assessment and treatment for: individuals presenting with moderate to severe dependency or complex multiple substance use individuals identified as having a co-existing mental health problem The Hamilton service provides specialist services to the most severely affected client group. Comprehensive alcohol and drug assessment and treatment planning form the basis of service delivery. Further support and professional services available from the team include: medical assessment and pharmacotherapy single point of entry service for all referrals, which are then triaged to the most appropriate service case management alcohol and drug counselling and education groups assessment/stablisation bed home detoxification programme consult liaison service for those in Waikato Hospital probation assessments outreach clinics

Referral Process
Self referrals are preferred although another person may make a referral with the persons consent and knowledge.
Service criteria/eligibility is adults, 20 years and older, however treatment will be provided to younger people in some circumstances due to service gaps. This is particularly relevant for rural areas. Clients younger than 20 years of age may be seen if no other provider exists in the area.
Our entry criteria requires that the individual will have issues associated with substance dependence. In rural areas significant others who identify as being affected by another’s alcohol and drug use maybe seen by the service.

Referral Process
Individuals accompanied by whānau are encouraged to attend a drop-in clinic at London Street (if residing in the Hamilton district). Here they will be seen by a CADS clinician and briefly screened for suitability to CADS and will receive further information about what we are able to offer.
