Formerly 3DHB - Acute Inpatient Services - Youth and Adult

Wellington, Hutt and Porirua provide three inpatient units for those experiencing severe mental illness.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service provides three inpatient units. The Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service (RRAIS) is located at Rātonga Rua o Porirua, Porirua, the Te Whare Ahuru Acute Inpatient Unit is located at Hutt Hospital, Lower Hutt and the Te Whare o Matairangi Inpatient Service is located at Wellington Hospital, Wellington.

Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service (RRAIS)

The Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service (RRAIS) is the acute adolescent inpatient unit for the central region. The service is for youth aged 12 to 17 who are experiencing acute mental health problems. We provide a bicultural service based on Kaupapa Māori frameworks and mainstream clinical models. Our service includes: An assessment and treatment led by a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. Daily care and input from a multi-disciplinary team. Cultural assessments where indicated. Whānau centered care and treatment with a focus on recovery and supporting youth when they leave the unit. Located at Kenepuru Community Hospital, Porirua.

Referrals are accepted from local child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) or a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

Description

The Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service (RRAIS) is the acute adolescent inpatient unit for the central region. The service is for youth aged 12 to 17 who are experiencing acute mental health problems.

Te Whare Ahuru Acute Inpatient Unit

The service is for people who live in the Hutt Valley who are experiencing severe mental illness. We sometimes admit people from Wairarapa and the wider Wellington region. Te Whare Ahuru is a 24 hour mental health assessment and treatment service for adults aged from 18 upwards who are experiencing serious mental health concerns. Here are examples of what we provide: Occupational therapist engages people in everyday activities of interest, paid or volunteer work, outside interests and activities to get them on the road to feeling better. Mental health nurses help with medication, advocacy and assessment. Mental health support workers focus on people’s comfort and their personal cares. Social workers provide talking therapy, support with families, psychosocial education, support with social services and connecting people with communities. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication if it is the best option. Located at Hutt Hospital, High Street, Lower Hutt

Te Whare O Matairangi is a 24 hour mental health assessment and treatment service for adults aged from 18 upwards who are experiencing serious mental health concerns. Here are examples of what we provide: Occupational therapists engage people in everyday activities of interest, paid or volunteer work, outside interests and activities to get them on the road to feeling better. Mental health nurses help with medication, advocacy and assessment, and can do home visits. Mental health support workers focus on people’s comfort and their personal cares.
