Formerly Taranaki DHB - Mental Health Assessment & Brief Care (ABC) Team

Taranaki DHB's 24 hours a day, seven days a week on site and mobile mental health assessment team responds to people experiencing distressing and/or debilitating mental health concerns across the region.

The ABC Team respond to in excess of 450 calls per month, many of these calls are self-referrals or concerned whānau. The ABC Team works with General Practitioners, TDHB Emergency Departments (both New Plymouth and Hāwera), Taranaki Police, other social service agencies, the public and individuals responding to requests for mental health assistance and advice.

Mental Health Assessments

The team are experienced Registered Nurses and appointed Duly Authorised Officers (DAO) under the Mental Health Act (1992) responsible for undertaking mental health assessments as well as facilitating Mental Health Act requirements in their DAO roles. The team has access to a duty Psychiatrist 24/7 and will facilitate assessments with a psychiatrist, if indicated.

This service caters predominantly for adults aged 17-65 years but also works with children, youth and older adults, especially after hours.
