Intellectual Disability/Mental Health Dual Diagnosis Service

The Intellectual Disability Mental health dual diagnosis service is a community based specialist psychiatry outpatient service for those with co existing intellectual disability and serious mental illness aged over the age of 18. Acceptance into the service is based on the premise that the IDDD service aims to facilitate the optimal care of people with intellectual disability and serious mental illness-/suspected psychiatric disorder who have associated level of complexity requiring input from specialist mental health service. The needs of dual diagnosis clients may fall into either IDDD service or adult mental health services depending on the complexity of their presentation. The most appropriate service to meet these needs is determined clinically. Geographically, the IDDD service accepts referrals for people living in Hamilton. Although some referrals may be accepted in surrounding towns, this may require a 'shared care' arrangement with the expectation the person travels to Hamilton for medical appointments. The following are not provided: Eligibility IQ testing Counselling services Needs assessments for funding of services Behaviour management Accommodation provision or other support services

Referral Process

As we are a specialist service, individuals must be referred by their GP. It is essential that all referrals are in writing. We expect the GP to remain involved as the primary physician and provide investigations and management of the physical care of the patient as appropriate.

Referrals need to be addressed via the Waikato DHB - Triage Service. If the triage team feel the referral team is appropriate it will be passed to the IDDD team, who will then either accept the referral or decline the referral with advice regarding appropriate alternatives.
