Description

Arowhenua Whānau Services is a Māori Health Provider offering a Marae Based Health Clinic, Youth & Adult Mental Health Services and Tamariki Ora for the Aoraki rohe (South Canterbury Region)

We are privileged to be able to offer a free and confidential service supporting whānau who face challenges in relation to their mental and emotional wellbeing within the South Canterbury region. Māori being our target, but available to anyone regardless of ethnicity, gender and those over the age of 13 who present with a diagnosis of a mild to moderate mental health issue.

Staff

Our Mental Health support is provided by our Mental Health Team - Registered Nurses  and MH Support Workers.
Our team of Registered Nurses provide a Nurse-led clinic daily in Temuka, a weekly clinic in Waimate and Timaru, a monthly clinic in Twizel. See website for details www.aws.health.nz
We provide a wide range of services, including immunisations, Covid vaccinations, sexual health, contraception, cervical screening, CVD risk assessment, blood tests and health checks.
Our Tamariki Ora Registered Nurses provide Well Child/Tamariki Ora services to Tamariki aged 6 weeks to 2-3 years old.

Mental Health Services

The role of the Mental Health Team is to provide community-based support and education in your home, in the community or at our service bases, whilst walking alongside those of you who have identified a need to utilize our service on your journey to wellbeing. This support is provided by our Mental Health Team. The support we can offer may include: Stress/Anxiety Management Sleep hygiene Addiction & sobriety support Emotional growth & development management Mood hygiene Building resilience Problem solving techniques Relaxation techniques Mindfulness training Action Plans Referral to other health providers, if appropriate We may communicate with other persons involved in your life but will always seek your approval first. The exception would be if your safety was in question or you were at risk. The most common mental health issues are Depression & Anxiety. Referral Process

Arowhenua Whānau Services are privileged to be able to offer a free & confidential service supporting whānau who face challenges in relation to their mental & emotional wellbeing to persons within the South Canterbury region, regardless of ethnicity, or gender and those over the age of 13 who present with a diagnosis of mild to moderate mental health issue.

We accept self-referrals or referrals can be submitted with your approval by a whānau member, friend, GP or other community professional and we endeavour to respond within 7 days.

An initial Mental Health Assessment will be completed at the first session where needs will be identified, support clarified, and short- & long-term goals developed.  Just go to the website aws.health.nz, click on referral, complete the form and send it to us. Or you can drop in and self refer. You will be seen by someone who can help you fill out a referral form.

We present all referral forms to our Mental Health Team and then make contact with the referrer or the person.

Stop Smoking Support

Arowhenua Whānau Services' free specialist smoking cessation service. We provide accessible, free and effective smoking cessation services, community based clinics & support groups, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), 1-on-1 support and advice, support and advice for women who are pregnant and smoking cessation support and resources for general practice.

Health screening

Cervical screening including self swabs (smear tests) are available at all our clinics. We can also arrange to come to you at home. Please call us on 03 615 5180. We accept walk-ins.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is an important step you can take to protect yourself, your kaumātua and whānau from the effects of the virus. For more information on the COVID-19 vaccines and eligibility visit Ministry of Health - COVID-19 vaccines Covid-19 vaccines can be administered before, after, or at the same time as other national schedule vaccines. When the Nuvaxovid vaccine is given at the same time as the Shingrix shingles vaccine or the Fluad Quad flu vaccine, there may be a chance of experiencing a stronger post-vaccination response and you should discuss this with your vaccinator. Covid vaccinations are available at our Temuka clinic. Please contact our office and make an appointment.

Our Tamariki Ora Registered Nurses provide a well child service to all Tamariki aged from 6 weeks to 2-3 years old in the South Canterbury Rohe. Usually referred by Midwives (LMC) Self referrals are welcome.
