Older Persons Community Mental Health

The Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) community team provide a specialist service that offers consultation and assessment; and coordinates care for older adults living with significant mental illness and/or cognitive decline and associated challenging behaviours alongside age related physical health issues. This service is provided in Nelson and Wairau.

Referral Process

Referrals to the Older Persons Mental Health team need to be completed by your GP.

Individuals eligible for referral are older adults with significant mental health problems and adults any age with an established diagnosis of dementia (Alzheimer's, vascular, mixed or idiopathic front temporal dementia type) complicated by significant behavioural or psychological symptoms.

Older Persons Mental Health Admissions Unit

The Older Persons Mental Health Admissions Unit provides treatment for older persons with acute inpatient assessment needs related to dementia, mental health decline who cannot be treated in the community and require a short period of time in inpatient care. Referral to aged residential care or support service after assessment, may be required. The Older Persons Mental Health Admissions Unit is located at Alexandra Hospital.
