This service is designed for people with long-term illnesses who may need support with their medicines. An assessment is used to identify the things that affect their ability to take medication as prescribed. Pharmacists work together with the patient to address each issue. The pharmacist is able to assist you with managing your medications and can coordinate your medications so that your prescription repeats happen all at the same time and therefore require only one trip to have your prescriptions refilled. They can also provide you with a reminder service (via text message, email or phone call) to let you know when your next supply of medications is ready for collection. If you are having difficulties managing your medicines (e.g. forgetting to take them), please ask your pharmacist whether this service is right for you.

Shingles (mate huaketo hei) is a painful blistering rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles tingles or hurts and then an itchy rash appears on one side of your body. The rash is in the skin of the infected nerve. It starts as red pimples that blister and then scab over to heal .The liquid in the blisters is infectious! Scabs are not. Blisters typically scab over after 7–10 days and the pain usually settles in 2–4 weeks. Early treatment with antivirals reduces the risk of ongoing pain. It can be prevented by a childhood vaccine for chickenpox and a specific vaccine for shingles, free for 65-year-olds. Usual treatment for shingles is an antiviral medication. Our trained pharmacists can supply a 10 days course of Valaciclovir for uncomplicated shingles – a consultation with the pharmacist is necessary. If it is a severe case or there are any “red flags” they will refer you on to a medical practitioner. Included in the consultation is the issue of a medical certificate, if deemed appropriate, for 1 to 3 days. Consultation Fee $30 / Valaciclovir course $30 Further info - https://healthify.nz/health-a-z/s/shingles/

Sore Throat and Strep A Testing - Got a sore throat and wondering if it is Streptococcus? Most sore throats get better after 2 or 3 days and go away completely in 7 to 10 days without any treatment. If you have strep throat, you will need to take antibiotics for 10 days. It is important to finish them all to stop you getting rheumatic fever. Our trained pharmacists can conduct a Rapid Antigen Test for Strep A which gives an immediate result. If the patient has a positive result then a suitable course of antibiotics can be issued plus a Medical Certificate for 1-3 days. The consultation costs $30 and a course of non funded antibiotics range from $15-25 depending on what antibiotic is right for you. The benefits are: 1.You get an immediate result, rather than waiting 3 days for the lab result to come back to you. 2. Less sick days off work or school - beginning treatment immediately will mean you recover faster 3. No unnecessary antibiotics - if your test is negative then there is no need to treat. 4. If you are at a higher risk of Rheumatic Fever i.e. Māori or Pasifika, you will need a course of antibiotics. Included in the consultation is the issue of a medical certificate, if deemed appropriate, for 1 to 3 days.
