What is ENT for Children / ENT4Kids / Otolaryngology?

Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery (ENT) — also known as Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery — is the medical and surgical specialty focused on disorders of the ears, nose, throat, airway, head, and neck. This includes concerns relating to hearing, breathing, swallowing, speech, sleep, and infections affecting children of all ages.

Our team provides assessment, management, and advice for conditions such as recurrent ear infections, hearing loss, speech delay, tonsillitis, blocked or persistent runny noses, snoring, sleep apnoea, airway concerns, and neck lumps.

ENT Surgeons (Otolaryngologists) are specialist doctors trained in both the medical and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat, and structures of the head and neck.

Associate Professor Murali Mahadevan has more than 25 years of experience as a Paediatric ENT consultant and is fellowship trained in Paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. His areas of expertise include all aspects of paediatric ENT, nasal and sinus surgery, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, and paediatric and adult neck lump surgery.

Dr James Johnston is a Specialist Paediatric and Adult ENT surgeon with advanced training in paediatric airway surgery from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. He has particular expertise in paediatric airway conditions, sleep-disordered breathing, voice and swallowing disorders, and complex ENT conditions affecting both children and adults. Alongside private practice, he is also a consultant at Starship Children’s Hospital.

We also work closely with a number of paediatric doctors and allied health professionals from other specialties. If your child’s condition would benefit from multidisciplinary care, we are happy to coordinate referrals and ongoing management with other paediatric specialists.
