What is Obstetrics?
Obstetrics is the area of medicine concerned with the treatment of women during pregnancy (antenatal), labour and delivery, and the time after childbirth (postnatal). A Specialist Obstetrician is the best person to care for women with previous gynaecological problems or medical problems that may affect pregnancy, and abnormal pregnancies such as multiple pregnancies. Obstetricians also enjoy caring for women who have no medical problems.

Once pregnancy has been confirmed, regular antenatal checks should be performed by a midwife, GP or obstetrician. In the first 28 weeks, these checks will be done every month but will increase as the pregnancy progresses.

Shore Birth offers a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week private specialist option of care for pregnancy, labour and birth. Six obstetricians form Shore Birth.

Referral Expectations

Women may be referred by their General Practitioner, a Midwifery Consultant or by self-referral.

Shared care arrangements may be made, with the woman's Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) remaining, either a midwife or General Practitioner.

Women are always seen in the antenatal period by a Specialist Obstetrician. The Specialist monitors her labour and is always present for the birth of the baby. Shore Birth has a small team of experienced midwives who care for their clients throughout the postnatal period. A 6-week postnatal examination with the Specialist normally concludes Shore Birth's care.

Liaison with tertiary centres may be required sometimes. This is always arranged promptly by a Shore Birth Specialist when deemed necessary.

Shore Birth has an 'open door policy' for its patients, their practice midwife is always available to check baby's heart beat or to give advice.

  • Shore Birth's fee is $5500 for full antenatal care.
  • Shared care with a non Shore Birth LMC is $5000.
