Description

Laser eye surgery is a simple procedure designed to improve your vision without glasses and contact lenses. The Wellington Eye Centre offers significant experience, unparalleled technology, and value to patients looking for laser vision correction in New Zealand.

At the Wellington Eye Centre, we offer three types of laser eye surgery - SMILE, LASIK and PRK. We also offer laser blended vision technology for eliminating reading glasses.

Our ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Logan, was the first eye surgeon in New Zealand to perform LASIK eye surgery in 1995 and he continues to stay at the cutting edge of new technology and developments in ophthalmology. In 2013, we became the first clinic in New Zealand to offer SMILE - a revolutionary procedure designed to correct short sight and astigmatism.
We use the VisuMax femtosecond laser - a leading piece of technology in the global market due to its precision and accuracy.

Our highly experienced team prides itself on excellence in patient care and we ensure that the entire process is as stress free as possible. From the initial assessment to the final check-up post-surgery, we focus on every detail of our patients’ experience.

We have clinics in Wellington, Nelson and Napier where you can have a preliminary suitability assessment for laser eye surgery and, if you are deemed suitable, you can also have a full medical assessment for laser vision correction. Your laser eye surgery will be performed at our Wellington clinic and if you live outside the Wellington region, we can offer you and an accompanying person, one off, complimentary, free accommodation at a hotel within easy walking distance of our Wellington clinic. You can have your postoperative care at your local clinic. We can arrange similar care packages for patients from other out of town regions.

What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is the branch of specialist medicine that is focused on the health of eyes and their surrounding tissues, including muscles, bones, eyelids, and tear production/drainage systems. Your eye is the organ of vision and consists of the cornea (the outer clear layer), the sclera (the white of the eye), the iris (the coloured part), the lens (lies behind the iris) and the retina (the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye). Your eyes ‘see’ by focusing light that enters the eye onto the retina which sends the image to the brain by the optic nerve.

Ophthalmologists are doctors who are trained in the study of eyes. Most will be trained in eye surgery, and may have particular areas of interest or expertise.

Procedures / Treatments

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering of the eye). The cornea can then focus light better on to the retina (the layer at the back of the eye that contains nerve cells that sense light), resulting in clearer vision and reduced need for glasses or contact lenses. The procedure involves cutting a flap in the cornea, removing tiny bits of corneal tissue with a laser and then replacing the flap. Read more about LASIK eye surgery here
