Impacted Tooth Extraction

An impacted tooth is one which has not grown through the gum correctly or is only part way through. This needs to be removed as it can cause problems with infection, decay, crowding of teeth or on rare occasions the formation of cysts. Removal of a wisdom tooth usually requires an incision (cut)  in the gum and access to the impacted tooth by pushing aside gum tissue and, if necessary, removal of some bone. The tooth is removed whole or in pieces and the gum stitched together over the hole. Surgery usually takes place under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation (twilight sleep) or under general anaesthetic
