Description

Introduction

I am a New Zealand trained orthopaedic surgeon, with extensive experience in fulltime private practice since 2008.  I specialise in knee and hip joint replacements, and all knee reconstructive surgery, in particular sports knee arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction.  I have a particular interest in robotic assisted knee replacement surgery.

I was born and raised in Auckland. I graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1997. Following this I successfully completed the advanced surgical training program of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, and gained my specialist qualification FRACS (Ortho) in 2005.

I subsequently had extensive specialised knee and hip fellowship training in the UK and Australia, over a 2 year period, before returning to NZ in 2008.

I am married with three teenaged children. I am also proud of my Tongan/German heritage and see myself as a role model for young Pasifika people.

I focus on the surgical treatment of hip and knee arthritis and sports knee reconstruction. I utilise modern surgical techniques, in combination with advanced anaesthetic care and patient specific post-operative rehabilitation. Of particular interest, I perform state-of-the-art robotic knee replacement surgery, which is revolutionising total knee joint replacement surgery.  I also perform patient specific hip replacement surgery using customised 3D printed guides.

I like to take the time to listen, learn and understand exactly what the patient’s problem is, and what their goals of treatment are.  I will then personalize the care and treatment for each patient to optimise their care, in order to get the best result for them.

What is Orthopaedics?
This is an area that deals with conditions of the musculoskeletal system (disorders of bones and joints of the limbs and spine). The specialty covers a range of different types of conditions starting with congenital (conditions which children are born with) through to degenerative (conditions relating to the wearing out of joints). The field of orthopaedics covers trauma where bones are broken or injuries are sustained to limbs.

Other conditions that sit under the spectrum of orthopaedics are metabolic conditions, neurological and inflammatory conditions.

Procedures / Treatments

Primary and Revision Hip and Knee Joint Replacement

For elderly patients joint replacement surgery is commonly required to treat damaged joints from wearing out, arthritis or other forms of joint disease including rheumatoid arthritis. In these procedures the damaged joint surface is removed and replaced with artificial surfaces normally made from metal (chromium cobalt alloy, titanium), plastic (high density polyethylene) or ceramic which act as alternate bearing surfaces for the damaged joint. These operations are major procedures which require the patient to be in hospital for several days and followed by a significant period of rehabilitation. The hospital has several ways of approaching the procedure for replacement and the specifics for the procedure will be covered at the time of assessment and booking of surgery. Occasionally blood transfusions are required; if you have some concerns raise this with your surgeon during consultation. Please refer to my website www.aucklandhipandkneesurgery.co.nz for more information.

Knee Arthroscopy (keyhole surgery)

Over the last 30 years a large number of orthopaedic procedures on joints can be performed using an arthroscope, where a fiber optic telescope is used to look inside the joint. Through this type of keyhole surgery fine instruments can be introduced through small incisions (portals) to allow surgery to be performed without the need for large cuts. This allows many procedures to be performed as a day stay and allows quicker return to normal function of the joint. Arthroscopic surgery is less painful than open surgery and decreases the risk of healing problems. Arthroscopy allows access to parts of the joints which can not be accessed by other types of surgery. Please refer to my website www.aucklandhipandkneesurgery.co.nz for more information.

High Tibial Osteotomy

The division of a crooked or bent bone to improve alignment of the limb. These procedures normally involve some form of internal fixation, such as rods or plates, or external fixation which involves external wires and pins to hold the bone. The type of procedure for fixation will be explained when the surgery is planned. Please refer to my website www.aucklandhipandkneesurgery.co.nz for more information.

Public Transport

Our offices are conveniently based a short 5 min walk from the Greenlane Train Station on the Southern Line.  You just have to follow the walkway which crosses underneath the Greenlane Motorway Interchange.

Parking

There is parking available in the basement of the Ascot Office Park, and there is lift access to Level 3, Building C.

At the 2nd roundabout at the end of Ascot Ave, go straight ahead up the short ramp, turn hard left and the driveway will take you round a right hand corner and down into the basement.

In the basement keep going straight for half the length of the basement level, then turn right, then right again and head back towards the lift bank under Buildings C and D.  Make sure that you park in a carpark labelled "ORTHOPAEDICS AND RADIOLOGY" in Bright Yellow letters.  Otherwise you are liable to be towed.

If there are no available carparks, then you have 2 other options to park :-

-  Park down the access road to Ellerslie Racecourse (Park and Display) - Closest - 5 min walk (flat).

-  Park in the Ascot Hospital Public Carpark area (Enter directly opposite the 1st roundabout after the traffic lights at Greenlane Road East) - 10 min walk (flat).
