Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, what is the difference?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors specialised in psychiatry and focusing on mental health disorders.

Contrary to other mental health professionals (such as psychologists, psychotherapists, or mental health counsellors), psychiatrists can prescribe medication to treat the mental health disorders of their patients.

Despite their differences, the various mental health professions are not only compatible, but also often prove complementary.

Qualifications, credentials and professional experience

I qualify as a medical doctor and psychiatrist (University of Ghent, Belgium).

I am registered as a vocational consultant psychiatrist with the Medical Council of New Zealand, and I am an affiliate member of the Royal Australian and NZ College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).

I have a 10-year experience in private and public practice in Europe (mainly in Belgium), followed by a 3-year experience in private practice in Mauritius. I was a consultant psychiatrist (SMO) with Mental Health Services of Counties Manukau DHB from February 2018 until December 2021.

I also hold a client-centred psychotherapy degree (University of Leuven, Belgium).

More details in relation to my qualifications and professional experience may be found on my LinkedIn page (nz.linkedin.com/in/niky-d-hulster-2b56888).

Make an appointment

My consultations are by appointment only. Each appointment for an in-person or Telehealth consultation has a fixed date, time, and location. If you want to make an appointment, please use my online Contact Form.

Referral

I may request a referral from your GP or from another qualified professional to assess whether my services are your best option as a first line of treatment. It is also your responsibility to ensure that a referral is not required for other reasons, notably to be able to claim a benefit under your health insurance policy. Otherwise, a referral is always welcome, but I do not make it mandatory to treat you. You may therefore self-refer.

If you have a referral, please send it to me in PDF format via my online Contact Form (see File Upload field).

Referral Expectations

Referral from your GP or from another qualified professional is always welcome, but I do not make it mandatory. Patients may therefore self-refer. Any referral should ideally include a brief history and short formulation of the patient's current struggle or difficulties.
