Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI)

Private Service, Radiology

Today

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Description

The Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI) was established in 2004, and is located at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. We are a private facility, offering advanced MRI services to both clinicians and researchers. We are IANZ accredited, and work with a wide range of clients, including District Health Boards, private insurance companies, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) and both University and commercial researchers.

We are an affiliated provider for Southern Cross Healthcare, so if you are insured with Southern Cross, CAMRI can seek prior approval on your behalf.

Our 3T Siemens Vida Fit (70cm wide bore), and 1.5T Siemens Avanto Fit system MRI scanners, plus a full set of coils, allows imaging of any part of the body. Every body part from small regions such as fingers and wrists, to whole body scans can be easily accommodated.

The comprehensive range of software allows post processing analysis in specialty imaging and our pool of consultant radiologists are highly qualified in their specific areas of interest.

While we are able to scan any area of the body, our areas of specialty include: cardiac, paediatric, neurological, vascular MRA, and advanced liver studies including FerriScans and MR Elastography (MRE).

Both scanners have the latest technology and software options allowing us to provide specialised techniques that are not available in regular private practices.

One of our latest techniques is Liver Lab, a simple test to evaluate fat and iron infiltration in the liver. This is important for monitoring early liver disease, and a possible alternative to a liver biopsy.

Liver Elastography is another new technique for evaluating tissue stiffness, especially useful for assessing liver fibrosis and monitoring disease progression.

Non contrast angiography is available at CAMRI using a technique called QISS. Clients unable to receive an administration of contrast can benefit from this technique by non-invasively imaging the peripheral vascular tree.

We are able cater to our younger patients by providing the opportunity to watch a movie of their choice, or listen to an audio story whilst they have their scan.

We also have a mock scanner, which is an MRI Scanner 'shell' without it's inner workings. This allows for anxious patients to have a test run of what a real scan would be like, helping them to familiarise and prepare for their scan. This is particularly useful for children and can reduce the need for sedation or general anaesthesia.

CAMRI is acknowledged by Siemens as their number one cardiac research facility in the world and this close collaboration allows access to the latest equipment and software developments for clinical and advanced research procedures.

Consultants

Our specialist consultants are all highly qualified in their respective areas which include paediatric, cardiac, vascular and neurological MRI. Our pool of Anaesthetists provides the opportunity for MRI under General Anaesthetic when all other areas have been explored.

Referral Expectations

Specialists

Medical Professionals can visit our website and refer their patients to us via our secure and confidential online Referral Form. If you have any questions please call our staff, they will be happy to help.

Patients

Please discuss with your specialist regarding a referral for an MRI.  A quote, appointment times and insurance details if applicable, can be discussed once we receive the referral form.

Southern Cross Healthcare

We are an Affiliated Provider for Southern Cross Healthcare. Once you have been referred to our centre, our booking team will contact you to make an appointment. Let us know that you are a Southern Cross member and have your membership number ready. We will then contact Southern Cross and arrange prior approval for your MRI scan.  You may need to pay a portion of the fee (insurance shortfall) depending on your insurance plan, however we can advise you of this once approval has been given.  If you need further information or advice about Affiliated Providers or your Healthcare Policy contact Southern Cross directly on 0800 800 181 or visit their website www.southerncross.co.nz

ACC

We are also ACC registered and offer imaging services to ACC clients.

Procedures / Treatments

Paediatric (General Anaesthetic and non General Anaesthetic)

Expecting a child to remain still whilst in a noisy environment, can be challenging for our younger patients, and it can be difficult to ensure no movement occurs during the MRI scan. Movement during an MRI scan can result in images needing to be repeated, essentially resulting in more time spent in the scanner. Therefore, we recommend an initial appointment to our mock scanner, so that our younger patients can become acclimatised to this, ensuring that their MRI appointment runs efficiently. While some children may be able to accommodate these requirements, others will require a general anaesthetic to enable the best images to be acquired. CAMRI is one of the few MRI facilities in New Zealand fully equipped with general anaesthesia and resuscitation equipment. Our team of consultant anaesthetists, technicians and recovery nurse are fully registered. Their extensive experience enables us to offer the best possible care for your child. For children that are comfortable and relaxed in the MRI scanner, we are able to offer a movie to watch or a story to listen to during the scan.

Cardiac

The Centre has a specific interest in congenital heart disease, ventricular function for cardiomyopathy and viability, pericardial disease and flow imaging. Ventricular function is assessed using 3D software, producing cardiac mass, ventricular volumes and ejection fractions.

Abdominal

Liver lesions at times can be difficult to characterise, however MRI scans and specific liver contrast agents, can provide a more accurate diagnosis. Iron disorders of the liver can be assessed non-invasively by MRI scanning. Our system has been specifically calibrated to enable quantification of liver iron concentration. Liver, liver iron studies, MRCP, renal and adrenal scans are part of our standard abdominal imaging protocols.

Vascular

MR Angiography evaluates the arteries in the body with the use of a contrast injection - particularly of the head and neck, thoracic and abdominal aorta, the renal arteries, and the legs. When it is not possible to administer a contrast injection, CAMRI has a selection of non contrast techniques available for use in certain circumstances.

FerriScan®

Measurement of liver iron concentration is critical in the management of patients with potentially fatal iron overload conditions. FerriScan is globally recognised as the gold standard in the measurement of liver iron overload. FerriScan is also available as a dual service with a Cardiac T2* measurement to enable better-informed decisions on the management of patients at risk of iron-induced organ damage. FerriScan analysis provides proven accuracy in the determination of liver iron concentration and has the highest sensitivity and specificity over the range of liver iron concentrations of any MRI-based method of LIC measurement.

Mock Scanner

The Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI) offers a 'Mock Scanner' experience which allows for a test run of what a real scan will be. It was the first facility of its kind in the country, so we have plenty of experience with making our patients feel at ease. The purpose of the Mock MRI is to enable children who require an MRI scan for clinical or research purposes to become familiar with the noisy and confined environment of the scanner and to practice the tasks expected of them. It is hoped that it will reduce the need for general anaesthesia in some young or anxious children, with an MRI experience that has been designed to be a fun and engaging "play" activity. The 'Mock Scanner' is also used to prepare anxious or claustrophobic adult patients prior to their MRI scan and can reduce the requirement for sedation.
