What is Radiology?

Radiological procedures are used for looking at the internal structures of the body, whether bone or soft tissue. Usually these examinations are carried out to:
  • diagnose disease states, such as cancer or heart disease
  • show the extent of injury to body structures
  • to aid in interventional procedures, such as angiography.
The radiologist may use different methods such as: X-ray and Ultrasound as well as some other specialised types of radiological imaging.

The Team
  • Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs) or Radiographers perform your X-ray examinations.
  • Sonographers are MRTs who perform your ultrasound examinations.
  • Radiologists  are specialist doctors who read and understand your images. They will also be involved if you have a steroid injection and a number of other ultrasound procedures.  They interpret the results of the images and send them to your doctor.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound works just like radar to make pictures of the internal organs or baby, except it uses very weak sound waves. Because they are so weak they can do no damage and that is why they are used to look at babies. Doppler Ultrasound A Doppler study uses ultrasound to measure how fast the blood is moving through your arteries and veins. It can be used to measure how much blood a baby is getting and also to diagnose blood clots, heart problems and blocked or narrowed arteries. What to expect? Most scans are done lying down and don't hurt. The pictures are made by moving a small camera over your bare skin. We use a small amount of contact jelly to help the sound waves pass through the skin.

Steroid Injection with Ultrasound Guidance

Steroid injections are used to treat joints and tendons that are inflamed and sore. The steroid - also known as cortisone - is a powerful anti inflammatory and pain killer. They used to be done by feel, but now most steroid injections are done with ultrasound to guide the injection so that we can be sure it has gone into the correct place and avoid the wrong place! We will provide you with more information when you come for your appointment.

X-ray

General X-rays Immigration X-rays X-rays are familiar to everyone, but there are a few things you need to be aware of. Pregnancy: we try to avoid x-raying pregnant patients, so please tell us if you are pregnant. Of course even pregnant women need x-rays sometimes so we use a lead apron to protect the baby. Digital X-rays: all of our sites use digital x-rays. This means we can send them over the Internet and doctors can log in through the Internet to see them. The days of patients carrying around big heavy packets of x-rays are thankfully over.
