Pain can also be present all the time, Although the cause is unknown, chronic inflammation from frequent thrush infections, hormonal changes, poor sexual arousal or chronic skin conditions can be a trigger for vulvodynia to occur, Pain with penetration of the vagina will often result in tight pelvic muscles which contribute to the pain, It is important to see a specialist who is experienced at assessing and managing this condition, There are many different treatments available and management is tailored to suit the individual. A combined approach usually works best and these include creams applied to the vulval area, referral to specialist physiotherapy, counselling or pain medication, Most women are very relieved just knowing that the pain is real and has a name
