Qualifications

MB ChB 2009 Free State; FCS (SA) (General Surgery) 2017

Profile

My name is Chun-Yen Wu and I am a general surgeon with a special interest in upper GI surgery and endoscopic surgery. I completed my basic medical degree (MBChB) at the University of the Free State, South Africa in 2009.

Following this I completed my basic surgical training at Kimberley academic hospital gaining experience in general surgery and trauma. I then started my advanced surgical training at Bloemfontein academic hospital from 2013 – 2018 under the mentorships of Professors Renald Barry and Roelf du Toit. At the end of training I was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons and I also completed my Masters degree in general surgery. This was then followed by a year of post fellowship training in upper GI surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery in Strasbourg, France.

My family and I moved to Rotorua in 2020 where I have been working as a consultant general surgeon at Lakes DHB. I am also the clinical lead for upper GI surgery at Lakes and medical student teaching.

Interests

My special interest includes :

  • minimally invasive surgery (keyhole surgery) for gallbladders and hernias,
  • anti-reflux surgery,
  • Gastroscopy and
  • colonoscopies.

Keyhole surgery in particular has made post-surgical recovery these days much quicker and less painful and I endeavour to always make this option available to my patients where possible.
