Profile

Sarah is a Sport and Exercise Physician and is the lead specialist at Axis in Queenstown. ‍

Sarah has worked with athletes from a wide range of sports and attended multiple commonwealth and Olympic games and was the New Zealand Co-Health Team Lead at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Sarah worked as Medical Director for Cycling New Zealand for 4 years (2013 - 2017), where she was instrumental in setting up their centralised health service. Her past team experience also includes working with a variety of teams including the Silver Ferns, Capital Pulse Netball, Wellington Phoenix Football, Counties Manukau Rugby, as well as a wide range of endurance sports and events. She also provided care at ITM cup, Super 14, International Sevens, and Rugby World Cup matches.  Outside of her regular clinic in Queenstown, Sarah now works as the Medical Director for Snowsports NZ based in Wanaka. 

Originally from Wellington, Sarah graduated from the University of Auckland in 2005 and did her initial hospital years in Tauranga Hospital. She then moved back to the capital to work in Emergency Medicine, General Practice and then Military Medicine in Waiouru before completing her Post Graduate Sports Medicine Diploma and beginning her specialist training.

Sarah is experienced in the optimal management of an extensive range of sporting injuries and musculoskeletal issues and, like the other specialists at Axis Sports Medicine, is well trained in injury prevention and illness risk management in active individuals. She has an interest in snow sports injury and prevention, and building load tolerance for many endurance based outdoor pursuits and occupations. Sarah has a special interest in low energy availability (RED-S) and the range of issues that encompasses, affecting both males and females and runs regular specialist clinics in this area which is now accessible via telehealth.  She is a member of the WHISPA (Women's Health in Sport; A Performance Advantage) panel, an initiative by High Performance Sport, working with a range of specialties to tackle the increasing prevalence of this issue.  Sarah has published research in Depression and Associated Life Stress in Elite Athletes and speaks regularly at conferences on this topic.
