Profile

Dr Shanu Subbiah is a refractive cataract surgeon. He has dual fellowship training in both retinal and corneal disease, so has expertise treating conditions that affect both the front and back of the eye. With this broad breadth of experience he provides personalised treatment for all his patients.

As well as his clinical duties at Eye Institute, Dr Subbiah is a consultant ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre. Shanu is involved in clinical research into macular degeneration and retinal disease, a subject that he has presented on in several international conferences. He is actively involved in regular teaching for optometrists, junior doctors and nurses as well as in training the next generation of ophthalmologists.

At present Dr Subbiah is present for consultations at Eye Institute Remuera, North and South.

Refractive cataract surgery

  • No needle anaesthesia (safe for patients on aspirin and warfarin)

Refractive lens exchange

  • A procedure that replaces the natural lens of the eye with an Intraocular Lens (IOL) and can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism

Laser Vision Correction (LASIK, PRK, SMILE)

  • Laser eye surgery, or laser vision correction, involves the use of a laser to change the shape of the surface of the eye, the cornea. By altering the shape of the cornea, laser eye surgery can remove any focusing error. It corrects Short Sightedness, Long Sightedness and Astigmatism.

Corneal surgery

  • Corneal graft surgery including partial-thickness DALK and DSAEK techniques

Pterygium surgery

  • Including removal of recurrent and advanced pterygium

Macular degeneration and retinal vascular disease

Post-Fellowship Training

After his specialist ophthalmology training, Dr Subbiah completed fellowships in both anterior segment, cornea and cataract surgery, as well as medical retinal disease at the University of Auckland. He has worked in a national research and evaluation centre for macular degeneration and has been involved in setting up frameworks for cataract service provision in Northern Ireland.
