Profile
Dr Shaochen Liu is a specialist consultant Dermatologist and fellowship accredited Mohs micrographic surgeon. He is an easy-going, warm hearted doctor who is dedicated in providing expert individualised patient-centred care. He is dual fellowship trained in his Dermatology subspecialty of cutaneous oncology (skin cancer) and has a passion for facial reconstruction.
Dr Liu grew up in Auckland and completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery medical degree at the University of Auckland. Before he entered his Advanced Training in Dermatology, he has gained a wide medical and surgical experience working in numerous specialties and hospitals including Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore Hospital, Northshore Hospital, Waitakere Hospital and Waikato Hospital. His multicentre training experience continued as he undertook his Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Advanced Training in Dermatology at Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre, Middlemore Hospital and Waikato Hospital. He went overseas to Brisbane, Australia to complete a one year cosmetic and laser fellowship. After which, he went on to pursue his subspecialty passion in cutaneous oncology in the United Kingdom. He first went to St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London, United Kingdom to complete his one year clinical fellowship in the clinical diagnosis and management of skin cancer. He then went to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom to complete his one year surgical fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery, advanced dermatologic surgery, nail surgery and facial reconstruction. Dr Liu was awarded the Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Advanced Dermatological Surgery by the British College of Dermatology (BCD), British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and British Society for Dermatological Surgery (BSDS) and is also becoming an International Affiliate Member of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS).
Apart from his subspecialty interest in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer, Mohs micrographic surgery and facial reconstruction, he also manages general dermatology conditions including acne, psoriasis and eczema.
Dr Liu is Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), Fellow of the New Zealand Dermatological Society Incorporated (FNZDSI) and Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Mohs Surgery (FNZSMS). He is also a member of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and British Society for Dermatological Surgery (BSDS).
Dr Liu has published in international peer-reviewed journals, including the Australasian Journal of Dermatology and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology journals. He has been awarded the Turnbull Hodge Award in 2020 for best presentation at the NZDSI national dermatology meeting.
Dr Liu speaks fluent English and Mandarin. In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors with his family (after putting on sun protection).
