Richard trained in Christchurch, then in Boston (Harvard Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery) and New York (Surgical Oncology Fellow). He also works at Christchurch Hospital (Consultant General Surgeon), Christchurch School of Medicine (Senior Lecturer) and Christchurch Weight Loss Surgery.

Richard performs a wide range of general surgery but has special interests in weight loss surgery, hernia surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery and sarcoma surgery.
