Description

The Audiology Department deals with patients experiencing hearing difficulties. Hearing loss is common and can develop at any stage of your life, even at birth, but most often happens as you get older. Hearing loss can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. Deafness is a partial or complete loss of hearing.

Referral Expectations

Audiology referrals are accepted from GPs, Ear Nose and Throat Surgeons, Paediatricians, Ear Nurse Specialists, and others in the community.

Newborn hearing screening checks are performed to see if your baby hears well. All eligible babies can have Newborn Hearing Screening free of charge. If your baby has a hearing loss, finding it early will help their language, learning and social development.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry uses sound and air pressure to check middle ear function. A small, soft probe is placed in your ear for a few seconds and a computer measures your ear's response to sounds and pressure emitted through the probe. This test is often carried out in young children to assess for glue ear.
