Service Provision:
Dietitians apply scientific knowledge about food and nutrition to individuals and groups in states of health and disease to promote optimal health within the social, economic and cultural context of the New Zealand population. (Dietitians Board, "Scope of Practice".)
As part of the multidisciplinary team, the dietitian is vital to:
- guide decisions about the route and timing of nutrition therapy
- assess the patient's nutritional needs
- monitor fluid and electrolyte status
- monitor patients blood result to guide nutrition care
- initiate use of specialised enteral and parenteral products
- adjust the nutrition care plan to specific disease state and changes in the patient's clinical condition.
- Counsel/educate patients and Whānau on a wide range of illnesses that reqire a change to diet.
