Description
Our physiotherapy services are aimed at providing patients with the knowledge and skills to improve and manage their own health. We have an enthusiastic and dedicated team of 50 qualified physiotherapists to provide this service. They are assisted by nine healthcare assistants.
Physiotherapy services are provided across a variety of sites and settings in Counties Manukau DHB. They span Allied Health, the Spinal Rehabilitation Unit, AT&R Unit, Kidz First Child Development Service, and community teams from Howick to Pukekohe, encompassing approximately 60 staff.
The Physiotherapy Department works in conjunction with the AUT School of Physiotherapy in providing clinical education to undergraduate physiotherapy students.
Referral Expectations
A referral to physiotherapy can be made by any healthcare professional in writing directly to our team. For clarification on any service ring (09) 276 0277 and you can be linked to the specific service.
Fees and Charges Description
There are no charges for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full costs of any medical treatment you receive during your stay.

Services
Inpatient rehabilitation services to all patients in wards 4,5, 23, 24 who will benefit from improved function. Outpatient rehabilitation services, in the AT&R physio gym, for patients with neurological disorders, falls risk, or following discharge from AT&R Unit. There is also a community rehabilitation programme for neurologically impaired people living at home. Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation is also provided at Pukekohe Hospital.

A comprehensive 8 week programme is available to patients who have recently had a myocardial infarction, angioplasty, cardiac surgery or who are limited by angina or heart failure. The programme consists of education and/or exercise, together with relaxation. Two programmes are available: Exercise for Fitness and Exercise for your Health. A comprehensive assessment is undertaken prior to and upon discharge of the exercise programme, and advice provided regarding on-going exercise for the future.

Hand Therapists are registered Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who are specialised in assessing and treating injury and non-injury related conditions of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow. This outpatient clinic is located in Module 5 at Manukau SuperClinic™ and is for all types of hand conditions e.g. orthopaedic, burns, post-surgical. Inclusion Criteria New Zealand residents (adults and children) who live within the Counties Manukau region with any of the following conditions: Trauma of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow. Non-traumatic conditions of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow (e.g. osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain’s, Dupuytren’s contracture, trigger finger, etc). Rheumatology patients following surgical procedures to the hand, wrist, elbow or upon referral from Rheumatology OT. Brachial plexus injuries. Congenital hand deformities. Exclusion Criteria Gross movement/pain anomalies of neurological cause such as CVA, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy etc (except where those patients have undergone a corrective surgical procedure at Counties Manukau Health). Anomalies of neurological cause in those who have received Botox injections. Shoulder injuries/conditions (these patients will be seen by MSOP physiotherapy). This may occur after surgery, injury or illness, arthritic conditions, broken bones and pain conditions. Physiotherapy aims to help you regain and maintain usual function. Inclusion Criteria New Zealand residents (adults) with musculoskeletal conditions resulting in impairment of function. Live within the Counties Manukau area. Patients not eligible for healthcare funding under Ministry of Health directives will be advised their treatment is chargeable. Patients must: Understand the reason for the referral Have given consent for the referral Be able to travel to Middlemore Hospital. The ASRU team will also support staff in managing any acute spinal injury inpatients at the Middlemore Hospital site.
