We have 16 inpatient beds available for acute medical and assessment, treatment and rehabilitation patients. Our medical admissions include people with respiratory and cardiac disorders and patients with multiple medical conditions. The Assessment Treatment & Rehabilitation area of the ward aims to improve the health, function, well-being and independence of people with disabilities. These conditions include stroke CVA, confusion and dementia, frail elderly, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson’s disease. We believe our patients should be treated with respect and dignity and be involved in any decision making and treatment while at the hospital.

Gore Hospital has both private and public specialist clinics on a regular basis. Appointments can be made once a referral has been received from a patient's GP or specialist. Public clinics are funded by the Southern District Health Board. Smoking Gore Hospital is a smoke free environment. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the hospital or on the grounds. Visiting Hours Hospital visiting hours are every day from 2:00pm to 4.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Visits outside of these hours and Emergency Department visits are at the discretion of the senior Registered Nurse on duty. Family/Whanau Room Our Family/Whanau room has a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, small living room, dining area, TV and beds. Please contact our nursing staff if you need to use it. The Family/Whanau room has been made possible by the generous support of the Cancer Society. Meals Meals are provided to all inpatients in their rooms or in the dining room. If you have special dietary requirements, please inform your nurse and she will arrange for the dietitian to visit you. The Southland Times is available for a small charge at the honesty box near the nursing station. Our District Nursing service provides holistic support to patients in their own environment, allowing them to maintain their independence with dignity. Laboratory diagnostic services are provided by Southern Community Laboratories and they are open Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 4:00pm. Services include Microbiology, Haematology, Biochemistry and Blood Bank services. A request form from your GP or specialist is required to have tests performed. Gore Hospital has a modern, comfortable Primary Birthing Unit with a birthing room, lounge and two twin bedrooms with ensuites. The maternity unit offers labour and delivery services, postnatal care within the hospital, and support with breastfeeding. These midwives work closely with specialists at Southland Hospital to ensure the best care for mother and baby. To receive Meals on Wheels, a patient must be referred by a GP or another healthcare professional and an assessment will be made by a District Nurse. If you qualify, the nurse will specify how many meals you receive each week and your dietary needs will be taken into consideration. Cooked, two-course midday meals are delivered Monday to Friday. The Mobile Surgical Bus visits Gore Hospital approximately every six weeks to perform low-risk elective day surgery procedures, including minor dental surgery. When an injury, illness or disability limits a person's ability to function, an occupational therapist can help them stay independent. The Occupational Therapy Department offers daily living retraining, adaptive equipment, housing modifications, cognitive assessments, concussion follow-up and preoperative joint replacement home visits. Needs assessments are done in conjunction with the Southern District Health Board to support older people in maintaining their independence. Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat movement disorders resulting from injury, disease or lifestyle factors. Our Physiotherapy team at Gore Hospital provides inpatient, outpatient and community physiotherapy services. Physiotherapy services are available to patients in our medical, maternity and rehabilitation wards. Our outpatient clinic supports patients with joint, respiratory, and neurological disorders. Pacific Radiology provides X-ray services to Gore Hospital. Most X-rays are free, but there are circumstances where you may be charged. The X-ray department is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday and for after hours/weekends there is an on-call service.
