Description

Waikato DHB services a wide area, and many of our patients come from out of town.

The NTA policy provides some targeted financial assistance for those in need who experience inequity that are domiciled within the Waikato DHB/Health NZ region i.e. within Waikato DHB/Health NZ defined boundaries (Localities).

This assistance is for patients who are required to travel from their residential address to reach specialist hospital treatment and general health care appointments where their locations don’t have health services available within reasonable commuting distance.

These patients and their support persons may be eligible to access travel assistance as outlined in the Ministry of Health NTA Policy. In additional to this, there are local exceptions that Waikato DHB/Health NZ has put in place to enable equitable access to healthcare within the Waikato district (localities) and equitable access to health care that is not available in the Waikato district.

Transport and Accommodation Assistance

  • Waikato DHB Transport Service - shuttle service for patients needing transport to attend out of town health related appointments
  • Private Vehicle Mileage - reimbursement for mileage between a patient's home address and the attending facility
  • Accommodation Costs - accommodation can be booked on your behalf at one of our preferred accommodation providers or you can claim back some accommodation costs for your own arrangements.

Please note: Not everyone qualifies for assistance.  Our NTA Coordinators can discuss your circumstances to see what help is available.
