Auckland City Hospital's Adult Emergency Department (ED) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

On arrival at the Emergency Department, you will undergo a brief screening and nursing triage assessment to determine the nature and severity of your illness or injury.

Te Toka Tumai (Auckland City Hospital) Emergency Department is one of two major trauma centres serving the Auckland region and has all major specialties available on site except for Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery.

The Department sees approximately 75,000 patients with a high index of disease severity (40% admission rate). The Department is co-located with the Starship Hospital's Paediatric Emergency Department which sees approximately 30,000 patients annually, making the Auckland campus one of the busiest in Australasia.

Our department is dedicated to improving Māori equity, health outcomes, and upholding Te Tiriti O Waitangi. We have on-site Oranga Co-ordinators (Māori Support Workers) who are available to every Māori patient in our department, while in the department or after they leave. We work in partnership with He Kāmaka Waiora Māori Health, and strive to lead change in the way our department responds to Māori health needs.

The Department is affiliated with Waipapa Taumata Rau (University of Auckland) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education. We are proud supporters of Te Toka Tumai’s Rangatahi Programme: a Māori and Pacific development programme designed to increase the number of Māori and Pacific health professionals to better reflect the population we serve and assist in reducing inequities our Māori and Pacific communities are currently facing.

The ED is a 51-bed facility that includes:

  • Up to 7 Resuscitation areas
  • A cardiac monitored area
  • A purpose-built isolation area
  • A Toxicology and Short Stay Unit

There are dedicated procedure rooms for performing ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, gynaecology, orthopaedic and general procedures. There is also access to 24-hour radiology services, laboratory and blood bank facilities.

The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is a 58-bed unit that includes:

  • Cardiac monitored spaces
  • Single isolation rooms
  • Multi-bedded rooms.

Referral Expectations

On arrival at the Emergency Department (ED), you will undergo a brief screening and a nursing triage assessment to determine the nature and severity of your illness or injury. 

Patients with more severe symptoms or injuries are treated before those with less serious conditions.

If you have been referred directly to an Inpatient Service, you may be sent directly to the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) to see the inpatient team.

If you would like to request an Oranga Co-ordinator involved in your care, feel free to state this to the nurse on arrival.

Fees and Charges Description

New Zealand citizens or those who have obtained permanent residence are entitled to publicly funded healthcare.
Non-residents may be required to pay for their healthcare. If you were not born in New Zealand and have not previously shown evidence of residency you should bring your passport with you on your first visit to the hospital for verification.
Emergency Medicine staff are unable to confirm your eligibility to receive free health care.

It is our policy to treat you for acute and urgent care regardless of your eligibility status. However, at the time of your presentation, we will need to establish your eligibility to publicly funded healthcare. If you are not eligible, you or your family will be billed for your treatment. You will receive an invoice with the amount due and payment instructions.

If you have had an accidental injury, we will lodge your case with Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). ACC provides cover for personal injury regardless of the person’s visa or eligibility status. If ACC declines the claim, you will be charged for your treatment.

Below are treatment costs applicable to our hospital for non-eligible patients. There may be other additional charges depending on services you required. Prices are subject to change.

  • Emergency Department visit costs from $566.72
  • A visit of more than 10 hours will cost from $1768.47

Additional Charges:

  • Interpreter from $86.02
  • CT Scan from $1156.21
  • Cardiac Monitoring per hour $159.39
  • Blood transfusion per unit $347.86

There is a temporary carpark outside the Emergency Department that should be used to pick/drop off patients only.

Paid parking for visitors and patients is available in the Visitors' Carpark - Carpark A (use the Park Road entrance and follow the signs).

NURSING TEAM

The nursing team consists of Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Charge Nurses, Clinical Nurse Educators and over 180 nursing staff.

HELICOPTER EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE (HEMS)

Auckland Emergency Department is working with Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust bringing Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Doctors on-board to work alongside our Intensive Care Paramedics.
The team is led by HEMS Medical Director Dr Chris Denny.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE TRAINING

The DEM at Auckland Hospital has accreditation from the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine for 2 years of advanced training. The Department currently supports 14 registrars in training. The Auckland regional training programme provides training posts in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care (adult and paediatric), Paediatrics, Anaesthesia and General Medicine. There is a robust regional education programme for trainees with specific sessions dedicated to preparation for college exams. There are 8 house surgeon training posts, allowing those who are considering a career in emergency medicine to gain some experience prior to committing to the formal training programme. We also provide training to medical students, elective students, army medics and St Johns ambulance staff.

The department also has an ACEM accredited Special skills post in HEMS and Medical Education. This is available to ACEM trainees in their last year of training.
