Description

The Diabetes Service provides specialist advice for the clinical management of diabetes.

This includes medical, nursing and nutritional management of diabetes as well as diabetes education and information for patients, family/whānau, health professionals, community groups and the general public.

People with diabetes are seen in outpatient clinics (both hospital and community settings) and as inpatients during a hospital admission.

The Diabetes Service includes education and clinical management of all types of diabetes  - type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (high blood glucose during pregnancy), and supports all age groups (children, adolescent, and adult).

The staff are based at Rotorua and Taupō hospitals but time is spent in the community across the Lakes District Health Board region.

Where to find us: see the Rotorua Hospital and Taupō Hospital maps.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the way your body deals with glucose (sugar). The amount of glucose in the blood is controlled by insulin which is a hormone produced by the pancreas (an organ that lies near your stomach).

Patients with diabetes have too much glucose in their blood. Lowering the blood glucose is important for maintaining health and the prevention of serious complications.
