Description

Asian and Ethnic Health Services supports Health New Zealand Waitemata and North Shore in delivering culturally appropriate, accessible and effective healthcare to Asian migrant and refugee communities. 

We aim to improve access to healthcare, patient experience, and health outcomes to culturally and linguistically diverse patients and their families by:

  • Achieving better health outcomes 
  • Improving communication  
  • Reducing inequalities
  • Removing cultural barriers by providing access to culturally appropriate services 

Aims:

  • To promote culturally and linguistically appropriate health services for ethnic communities
  • To improve access to health services and health information for the Asian & ethnic population
  • To provide cultural support, emotional support and, coordination services to Asian patients/clients
  • To provide communication support to health professionals and non-English speaking patients/clients and their families using health services
  • To provide cultural information and advice to health staff to enhance cultural competence
  • To improve access to primary and secondary health services for non-English speaking patients

WATIS - Waitematā Translation & Interpreting Service

WATIS is a Waitemata in-house translating and interpreting service with a 24-hour, 7-days call centre for coordinating requests for 142+ languages, including NZ Sign language. Interpreting Service provided include: Onsite interpreting support face to face communication - onsite interpreting. Interpreters are present at meetings/interviews to facilitate communication between parties. Asian and Ethnic Health Services (AEHS) is introducing a special programme ‘Healthy Mother Healthy Future (HMHF) - Asian Perinatal Wellbeing Project 2022’. This programme is supported by the Ministry of Health (MoH) with the goal of supporting the emotional wellbeing of pregnant Asian women, and mothers with infants by improving their accessibility to relevant services and information. “Your Emotional Wellbeing and Beyond” booklet was developed by the maternity service (Te Whatu Ora Waitemata) to support pregnant women and mothers and it was translated with clinical and cultural reviews by Asian Mental Health Service, Asian Patient Support Service and WATIS (Waitematā Translation and Interpreting service) as well as Asian and Ethnic consumer reviews. The wonderful booklet is now available in multiple languages - English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Tagalog, Pashtu, Urdu, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Burmese, and Bengali.
