Description
We aim to see Maaori living longer, healthier lives with whaanau and in their communities. We have four key portfolios within Maaori health to help achieve equity for Maaori.
- Maaori Health In-Patient Provider Arm Services is a Monday to Friday 0800 – 1630 whaanau-centred and outcomes focused service that provides support to all Maaori patients and their whaanau who are admitted to a Counties Manukau Health Hospital.
- Maaori Workforce Development provides support for recruitment, retention and progression of Maaori with Counties Manukau
- Kaumaatua and Kuia provide cultural leadership, supervision, and mentoring across Counties Manukau Health.
We can support:
- Navigation - walk alongside you through your admission to hospital, provide advice and guidance;
- Advocate for you if you feel you need support to resolve issues, or have your voice heard;
- Provide tikanga advice or support;
- Facilitating whaanui hui or multidisciplinary meetings;
- Support to clarify your plan of care / or treatment;
- Prepare you for discharge and any upcoming appointments;
- Provide advice about health providers in the community for health and social needs

Services
This is an inpatient cultural support service for all Maaori admitted to Middlemore Hospital and requesting support throughout their inpatient journey. We prioritise kaumaatua and kuia (over 60 years). The service provided includes: Karakia Advocacy Kaumaatua/ kuia support Cultural support during bereavement, whaanau hui, ward rounds

Refreshments
Pataka Place (Food Court) is available by the main entrance inside the hospital, just look for the directions at the main entrance or ask for assistance. Otherwise there are vending machines or coffee stalls.
Within 1-2 kms there are also food outlets that provide affordable food both in Māngere or Papatoetoe, particularly at the northern end of Hospital Road, turn left over the railway bridge.

We are situated within Middlemore Hospital in the Ko Awatea Building.
Public Transport
By Bus or Train
Daily bus and train services operate regularly through the day. The bus stop is located on the Great South Road.

By St Johns Health Shuttle
A Monday to Friday shuttle service is operated by St John in some areas of Counties Manukau. The service is free (koha/donations are welcome) and staffed with reliable, fully-trained drivers that pick up patients, take them to their appointment, and drop them home safely again. If you have a disability and may require assistance phone the main hospital number FREEPHONE 0800 266 513 ask for Disability Services Support during normal working hours and they will be able to assist you.
Parking
On site parking is costly, so public transport is best advised. There is also free off street parking within 1-2 kms but it is advisable to check that it is NOT paid for parking/or that there is not a time limit. So PLEASE CHECK.
If an emergency you can be dropped straight off at the Emergency Department entrance or the Birthing Unit entrance both on the main hospital road.
Accommodation
Currently we have NO emergency accommodation and local hotels are often fully booked. It is advisable to please try and arrange some form of accommodation with whaanau or elsewhere before you arrive.
