Infectious Diseases is the branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis and management of diseases which involve infection of the human body. These may involve bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. These infections may occur in the community or as a complication of treatment in hospital. Many infections are dealt with by other medical and surgical teams but some require a specialist approach.
The Infectious Diseases team is made up of specialists in infectious diseases and registrars training in the discipline. The team liaises closely with the clinical microbiologists in the laboratory as well as specialist pharmacists, nurses and infection control personnel.
