Alcohol and drug use can become problematic and can cause legal problems, social problems, harm to you and to your relationships.
If you or a loved one are experiencing problems related to your use of alcohol or drugs, the Bay of Plenty Addiction Service may be able to support you.

If you are experiencing problems from your use of alcohol or drugs and want to see the Addictions Service, call 0800 800 508 (Tauranga) or 0800 77 4545 (Whakatāne).
When you call, you will talk to a member of our team who will check that the Bay of Plenty Addictions Service is the right service for you, and will recommend other treatment services if these would meet your needs better.
You can also be referred to the Bay of Plenty Addiction Service by a health professional like your GP, another hospital service or from other organisations in the community.
This service is for adults only. If a child or teenager needs support for alcohol and/or drug misuse, contact Sorted on 0800 486 947 (Tauranga) or Voyagers (07) 306 0470 (Whakatāne).
The Addictions Service has a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, peer support workers, nurses and addiction clinicians who can all help you in your recovery from alcohol and/or drug misuse.
What to expect
You might see the Addictions Service at Tauranga or Whakatāne Hospital clinics or at one of our outreach clinics.
Our service provides:
- Alcohol and other drug assessment and treatment using a harm reduction approach
- Substance withdrawal treatment
- Referral to psychiatry and /or psychology where this is indicated
- Opioid Substitution Treatment
- Peer support
- Referral to residential rehabilitation and other addiction services
- Assessments for the Substance Misuse (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act
Government funding of health and disability services means that eligible people may receive free inpatient and outpatient public hospital services, subsidies on prescription items and a range of support services for people with disabilities in the community.
