If you are suffering from mental health or addiction issues and are pregnant or have recently given birth, the Maternal Mental Health & Addiction Service may be able to support you.

Fees and Charges Description

Government funding of health and disability services means that eligible people may receive free inpatient and outpatient public hospital services, subsidies on prescription items and a range of support services for people with disabilities in the community.

Maternal Mental Health & Addiction Services

The Maternal Mental Health & Addictions Service has a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists and social workers who will all help you through your treatment. What to expect You will see the Maternal Mental Health & Addiction Service in one of our community clinics at Tauranga Hospital or in Whakatāne. Our service can support you during pregnancy and up to one year after your baby is born. We provide: specialist assessment recovery-orientated treatment, intervention and advice support and education groups

Referral Types

Self referral, GP, DHB clinical services

Referral Process

You may be referred to the Maternal Mental Health & Addiction Service by a health professional such as your GP or another hospital service if:

  • You have developed moderate or severe mental health or addiction problems during your pregnancy or up to 12 months after your baby is born
  • You have had a previous history of severe mental illness or addiction and are planning on becoming pregnant
  • You are currently being seen by the Adult Community Mental Health or Addictions Team and have become pregnant
