MidCentral DHB Oncology Services
Public Service, Oncology, Cancer Network Group, Haematology
Description
MidCentral Health Oncology Services, based at Palmerston North Hospital, are part of the Regional Cancer Treatment Service (RCTS). We provide care to people from Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Whanganui, Horowhenua and Wairarapa.
Patients from across these areas may be required to travel to Palmerston North for treatment. MidCentral Health Oncology teams also visit clinics across the RCTS region.
Various types of cancers respond differently to different types of treatment. Your cancer specialist will advise you of the best treatment regime for you and this may involve Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and/or Clinical Haematology.
Medical Oncology
The MidCentral Medical Oncology team specialises in chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
Chemotherapy treatment at Palmerston North Hospital is generally given as an outpatient attendance in the Medical Oncology Day Ward. Ward 23 provides treatment to those who do need to be admitted into hospital for treatment.
The duration of chemotherapy treatment is dependent on the treatment you are receiving.
Read more about chemotherapy and our service here.
Radiation Oncology
The MidCentral Radiation Oncology team specialises in radiation therapy for cancer.
Radiation therapy can vary in length from one day to several weeks. Over the course of treatment, the radiation oncology team will provide care and support to help you through your treatment.
Read more about radiation therapy and our service here.
Clinical Haematology
The Clinical Haematology department is involved in diagnosing and treating diseases of the blood and bone marrow.
Although it is part of the Regional Cancer Treatment Service (RCTS), only some of the patients have blood cancers. Many have other blood diseases or problems.
