Formerly Northland DHB Orthotic Department

The Whangārei Hospital Orthotic Department has three experienced and qualified orthotists.

Orthotic supports provide assistance in rehabilitation and in the management of disabilities.   The purpose of an orthotic support is to prevent or correct abnormality, to assist or restore function or to immobilise joints, limbs or muscles or to aid healing. The service provides a range of braces and supports from head to toe, accommodative footwear and foot supports and is available to all Northland residents and visitors to Northland.

To access this service you will require an electronic referral from your GP.
If your referral is for a more complex need and your GP has referred you to a specialist then the referral should be from the specialist.

Specialists can include Orthopaedic surgeon (Public or Private), musculoskeletal physician, rheumatologist or other specialist (Public or Private).
Other referral sources include Hospital based physiotherapist, occupational therapist or podiatrist (note: limited prescribing rights).

Referral Expectations

All referrers must only make referrals for matters that are within their scope of practice
