Waitematā District - He Kāmaka Waiora Māori Health Provider Services
To improve health status of Māori, by helping hospitals cater for Māori, retaining Māori who become healthcare professionals and to improve healthcare practices so that Māori values are respected. He Kāmaka Oranga was established in 1994 with the aim to improve Māori Health. Then in 2013 collaboration of Māori Health Provider Service Te Toka Tuami Auckland and Mo Wai te ora Māori Health Provider Service Waitematā DHBs became He Kāmaka Waiora Māori Health Provider Services Waitematā and Te Tokau Tumai Auckland Districts.
The Chief Advisor Tikanga Māori Health leads the organisation in managing relationships with Mana Whenua and Iwi Māori from a tikanga perspective and provides assistance in managing Titiri o Waitangi risks. The role of the Chief Advisor Tikanga is supported by Waitematā Hospital and Auckland Hospital Māori Health teams who are responsible for policy development, research, workforce development, planning and funding, provider management, quality, and clinical leadership across the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.
The introduction of practices based on Tikanga Māori have made a significant contribution to Māori Health across the region. The He Kāmaka Waiora Māori Health Provider team works with Māori patients and their whānau when they need to access the hospital services. This includes coordinating whānau accommodation, providing social and cultural and advocacy services and working with Waitematā and Auckland District clinicians and other Waitematā and Auckland District staff to ensure that services are responsive to the needs of Māori Health gain.

A summary of Māori customs and practices that are relevant to the patient settings within Waitematā District
This directory of services has been developed to assist whānau in Waitematā and Auckland to access relevant and needed services to support them on their journeys to create and maintain sustainable and vibrant futures. The title of the Directory, He Ara Takahinga, is significant as it is symbolic of a pathway toward wellness that has been provided and travelled by the generations before us. The directory focuses on first-point-of-contact services or those services where whānau can self-refer or refer whānau members without requiring a referral from another service provider. Its intention is to act as a resource for whānau as they navigate their way to becoming stronger, healthier and resilient whānau. The directory is separated into five sections – Education, Health, Social Services, Information Services, and Community Facilities. Each section is further divided into Auckland North (North Shore), Auckland West (Waitakere to Helensville), Auckland Central, and Auckland South. Providers of key services associated with each of the sections are listed in alphabetical order. For ease of reference, throughout the directory, Māori service providers and Pacific service providers are identified where it is helpful to distinguish between providers. This will aid those whānau who have a preference to access services that might more ably align to their cultural practices and heritage.
